Is Mr. White the head of Quantum? Is he the mastermind that has put this all together?
At the opera, we saw many people who appeared to be wealthy criminals and illegal investors. They seem, like Greene, to be businesspeople making money through illegal operations. They were well-dressed, with bodyguards and opera glasses and all that. Any one or two of them could be the villain of the next movie (although I hope for someone more…colorful). (Ha! Colorful! See what I did there?)
So who’s in charge? Is it White? Is it any of them? They might be a consortium, agreeing to various projects, pooling funds so that each of them succeeds in individual goals. But they were in the business of turning spies, and that sounds like there’s a bigger plan.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe problem with Mr. White now is that deleted scene from QOS where he’s shot at Haines’ estate.
It has been cut in the end, but it wás part of the screenplay/script.
So when they decide Mr. White will be the top boss after all, this scene comes complete useless and has to be erased from the chronology/knowledge. (Better not to be put on the QOS DVD then).
So in the end I think he’s nót “Blofeld”. Near the top yes, but not onatopp of things.

Deleted scenes are not part of the chronology.
Look, Peter Jackson may have messed some people up. He made the LOTR trilogy knowing that some scenes would end up deleted, and he considers the expanded editions on DVD the “real” versions. But that is atypical.
There are many DVDs with alternate endings, some which dramatically change the meaning of the story. The Tailor of Panama springs to mind. “Let’s try it a couple of ways, look at it, and decide which way to go.”
Deleted scenes are deleted, gone, trash, NOT part of the film.
I don’t think White is or should be the head of Quantum. The most basic thing I point to is that he is too operationally hands on. He’s there for the money hand off in the mud in CR, actually carries out assinations, etc. At the same time he’s a little old to be an enforcer. I think his role is developing and that certainly at the time of CR, Quantum, who heads it etc, was not defined. Seeing how Greene got treated tells me a consortium is more likely, and a nice change from the old Number 1 hierarchy of the Blofeld era. Plus in today’s world, effective criminal enterprises are likely to be loose networks, engaging when expedient, then receding into the shadows.
Smart observations, butterfly, I tend to aggree.
Its true about deleted scenes to be not part of the stories. But then again if they had written it they already had in mind not to make White top man in the first place. Most of the time the writers also think things through even if they dont show or tell it onscreen or write in the script. So i think Purvis & Wade already have a complete dossier on Quantum.
I hope they make a ‘Goldfinger’ where they show the origin/first appearance of Moneypenny and Q at MI6 and let Quantum come back in the possible 4th Craig film. A look at Bond appartment (wich show up alot in the books) would also be nice

P.S.
Not only Peter Jackson (LOTR extended is btw much better, especially if you read the books) made director cuts Ridley Scotts Blade Runner has 5 versions, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and American Gangster also have extended versions.
I think you’re right about what it says about the writer’s intentions for White. Of course, it never became canon so it could change in the next movie.
Although other directors have extended and different versions of their films, Jackson is unique in that he always intended for the DVD release to be the definitive version. Other extended releases tend to be retro-fits.
White could be the head and Bond could have shot him… vengeance and termination upon finding and confronting Hayes… worth seeing this deleted scene.
Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. He sure had a nice villa and dedicated personal staff. Oh well, “Tosca isn’t for everyone.”
I think White is number 2 at Quantum. Having filmed that alternate ending to QoS, I think it would suggest that he is merely a high ranking member and not its leader.
I wonder if Bond 23 will continue the Qunatum story strand or if they’ll go for something entirely original, ala GF.
In one of my posts at UnivEx, I predicted that there will be a totally new villain (who isn’t connected with QUANTUM) in Bond 23, but nearing the end of the film, there might be another Quantum lead. I think I’m going to stick by this, unless they’re going to do a proper trilogy, in which case I’d like to champion something like Raymond Benson’s High Time To Kill, Doubleshot or Never Dream of Dying, as a basis for the next film. Obivously, they’d have to adapt the story to feature QUANTUM, instead of the Union, but I think one of Benson’s storys would be perfect.
Of course, I’ve been saying Eon should adapt the Gardner and Benson novels for years and they still haven’t, so I won’t get my hopes up.:P
Interesting thoughts. The advantage of a true trilogy is they can be sure they’ll have Craig. After 3 it’ll get dicey.
