I have a bunch of book reviews coming up.
I won a copy of James Bond and Philosphy (I’m pretty lucky with the winning things). I’m more than half-way through it but it’s taking me forever.
I was sent a review copy of The Battle for Bond, and I’ll also be able to report on the news about that book. I should be updating you on that in a couple of days.
I also received a review copy of The Bond Code. They must have been pretty thrilled to find me; there aren’t many authors with expertise on both James Bond and the occult. (Ironically, the publisher, New Page, turned down The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book, which I teased them about when they contacted me.) This is the book I’m reading right now and if I’m disciplined I should be finishing it in a couple of days.
A couple of weeks ago I finished reading Colonel Sun, which is the very first post-Fleming Bond book (both chronologically, and the first one I’ve read). Discussing post-Fleming Bond was a requested topic, but I want to at least get into some of the Gardner before I start such a topic.
Probably the first book review you’ll see here is The Bond Code, but I’ll also try to get the Battle for Bond news up in a few days, and there’s a magazine review coming as well.
See? I think of you!

Nice catch. I usually run through my news feeds by 10 am but I’m running late today.
Have you ever read The Man Who Saved Britain by Simon Winder? I am currently read it and am enjoying the scholarly approach and historic perspective through which the book explores how Bond help pull Britain out of its post WWII implosion.
OK, I’ve never read any Bond books yet (hope to do so in the future), but I was thinking about LALD.
Correct me if I am wrong but was there more elements to the story that was not captured in film? If true then would you like to have a ’spooky’ storyline done again for a Bond movie as a stand-lone?
I liked LALD and the voodoo angle is entertaining and I think EON should re-consider. Since this is a reboot, I don’t see any problem of one being made somewhere down the line.
There were so many other plots re-cycled in the franchise but this one was never done and should be re-visited, minus the campiness and throwing in some intense, dark side. It has to be unique. A bit of horror-esq element for the ages.
The Man Who Saved Britain is on my wish list.
Jay, I don’t believe LALD can be redone. The movie is different from the novel, true, but a good portion of the novel was filmed. Some of it in the movie LALD, a section in the movie LTK, and a section in the movie FYEO.
A lot of what was “dark” about LALD (the novel) was profoundly racist. It was difficult to read, on the Stepin Fetchit level.
Barbara Broccoli has said that no more Fleming novels will be filmed, that no existing filmed novels will be remade, and that seems like the final answer.
