Andy York of Matchflick has written a column on the Top Ten Entrances in Movie History. Honey Ryder arising from the sea makes #5.
It’s a fabulous moment, iconic, startling, memorable. One of half a dozen stirring, stunning impressions that even people who are pretty much unfamiliar with the world of Bond recognize. She is a goddess, she is beauty personified, she is striking, strong, athletic, independent, and oh, I dunno…perfect.
Today’s IMDb poll asks members to pick their favorite among York’s top ten. So far, Honey is placing fifth, so run over there and give her your vote!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackDarth Vader I can understand, but Capt. Jack Sparrow?!?! I have seen the movie and cannot for the life of me remember the entrance. John Doe from Se7en?!?! Who are these voters? Obviously young and dumb!
It’s a weird series of choices, isn’t it? I mean, Harry Lime, definitely. The two Leone choices, absolutely.
There are other great, great entrances that didn’t make the list. I think Frank N. Furter’s high heel descending the elevator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is exquisite. The alien in Alien–what could be more dramatic than emerging from someone’s chest?
Zippertuck, the linked Matchflick column describes the entrances, and makes a case for each.
I still have serious reservations about Sparrow’s entrance in Pirates! In fact I have serious reservations with anything particularly contemporary simply because it’s still fresh in people’s minds and not necessarily classic. I agree with your two choices! What about the entrances of The Wicked Witch of the West and Glenda from the Wizard of Oz? This list is suspect is you ask me.
The witch (and Glinda) are great thoughts!
Also, for a movie with great entrances, what about Field of Dreams. Ray Liotta’s introduction? The father at the end? Burt Lancaster? The movie is exquisite in how it introduces characters.
You are so right! Field of Dreams never even crossed my mind. Damn I need a blog!
