I actually did this in The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book, but I don’t have the manuscript in front of me, and I thought it would be fun to do it again, fresh. I mean, I may end up repeating myself, but I might not.
Here’s the idea: Each actor who played Bond can be characterized, summed up in a few words. Let’s start with the notion that each actor had something valuable to bring to the role, and not be insulting, and then let’s see where we go.
Sean Connery is the one who…
is Scottish.
Created the role.
Has a lisp.
Kills in cold blood.
George Lazenby is the one who…
is Australian.
Only played Bond once.
Has dimples.
Broke a stuntman’s nose during his audition.
Roger Moore is the one who…
was “a gentleman spy.”
Made more Bond films than anyone else.
Raised one eyebrow.
Was tongue-in-cheek.
Timothy Dalton is the one who…
is Welsh.
Was the “dark Bond.”
Is known for playing villains in numerous movies.
Is the tallest Bond.
Pierce Brosnan is the one who…
is Irish.
Straightens his tie.
Seems like a combination of all his predecessors.
Should have gotten one more chance!
Daniel Craig is the one who…
is blond.
Is the shortest Bond.
Surprised a lot of fans.
Is the “rebooted” Bond.
Your turn!

is the macho-chauvinistic Bond.
He is the jack-of-all trades Bond.
George Lazenby is the one who…
is experience lacking Bond.
Roger Moore is the one who…
is the whimsical Bond.
He is the only Bond to wear safari suits.
Timothy Dalton is the one who…
is the angry man’s Bond.
He is relentless and crude.
Pierce Brosnan is the one who…
is the charming Bond.
He is sophisticaed and elegant.
Daniel Craig is the one who…
is unrefined and raw Bond.
He is getting his feet wet.
OOps error above on Moore & Bronson, last lines need to be switched. Please fix it.
Fixed! Nice contribution.
Sean Connery is the one who..
defined the role
got bored with the role
defined cool
but was a bit of a dork
George Lazenby is the who one
did one film
was too young for the bond he portrayed
had the most youthful exuberance
should have stuck around to do more
Roger Moore is the one who
is the quintessential gentlemen
lived the role
looked the best
had the wittiest comebacks
Timothy Dalton is the one who
tried to capture the spirit of Fleming
dressed the worst
was unconvincing as Bond
is such a good actor he is still impossible not to like
Pierce Brosnan is the one who
was born to play the role
dressed the best
overplayed the emotional scenes
ran like the wind
Daniel Craig is the one who
is the most convincing
is the best actor
combines arrogance and determination perfectly
will be the best Bond ever
Nice, Joe.
Sean Connery made the mold.
George Lazenby broke it.
Roger Moore molded Bond’s sophistication.
Tim Dalton found Ian Fleming’s cast.
Pierce Brosnan molded himself making four films.
Daniel Craig’s mold will shine in Bond 22 if the screenplay is as strong as 21′s.
Sean is…
The one who couldn’t hide his brogue until Diamonds Are Forever, at which point he looked 50 years old.
The one my fiance has said on several occasions she would like to slap. (“I thought we could just admire the view” in Dr. No elicited this response the first time.)
The hairiest one.
Suave, cool, and can knock a guy on his ass in one blow.
George is…
A really good fighter, aside from the Herman Munster-esque fast motion (Why, John Glen, WHY?!?)
Wooden.
The smart-ass (at its best a good thing, at its worst it is groan-inducing)
A massive “what-if?” for the Bond series. Would he have killed the franchise? Would he have become more killer? Would he have become a clown?
Roger is…
The one with the greatest sense of humor, in his portrayal of 007 and in real life. (He’s hilarious in interviews.)
Occasionally tough – Miss Anders, Stromberg, Orlov – and given the lightness of his character, when he does this it is impressive.
Three years older than Connery and yet he held the part until he was 58. What the Hell?!
The one who ironically made his two best pictures (FYEO and Octopussy) after he began debating his resignation and began to look too old.
Timothy is…
Ian Fleming’s Bond.
The best actor.
The one who isn’t so much a “what if?” to me so much as a “why did some stupid legal tangle keep him from making at least three more pictures?”
The one with the most expressive eyes, showing anger, steely resolve, fear, shock, and the occasional twinkle without the Moore smirk.
Pierce is…
A pretty boy, although the real Pierce Brosnan would probably kick my ass for saying that – but he wouldn’t because he’s apparently a very nice guy.
Able to hide his Irish accent, unlike Sean with his Scottish accent.
A little too much like Moore than Sean, though he had some great moments – letting Alec fall, shooting Elektra and saying “I never miss.”
The one who wound up being just as unlucky as his predecessor, getting cut out of the role at least one picture too soon.
Daniel is…
A little too buff.
The one who gets to endure Le Chiffre’s torture – poor guy!
The one who experiences the worst loss since OHMSS with Vesper.
Essentially Timothy with more muscles, blond hair, and eyes that don’t twinkle.
Nice stuff, Alex.
